Senior Scam Alert
Walmart.com is targeting senior citizens in the state of Washington for a “free Walmart+” membership with “free returns”. Once the targeted senior signs up for the membership and places a food order, the senior citizen is charged a 10% tip for the driver as well as $1-$5 “bag fee”. These orders are given to non-Walmart workers to fulfill the order and placed in their personal vehicles. These non-Walmart workers will make substitutions in favor of more expensive items, increasing your bill. When the deliveries arrive late and spoiled, missing items, or not at all, Walmart’s site directs the victim to their chat box which is AI-manned. They are then told they will receive a phone call. IF they receive a phone call they are told to wait for a refund. Shortly after the phone call ends, the victim receives an email with the following text:
Hello,
Thank you for contacting us about order 0123456-111 placed with Walmart.com. We won’t be able to issue a refund or a replacement for your order at this time. For further information, please visit Walmart.com/help.
This email is sent from accountreview@customercare.walmart.com.
Unfortunately, the Better Business Bureau that serves Bentonville, Arkansas where Walmart.com is located will NOT take complaints against walmart.com. All complaints are immediately closed.
If you are a Washington resident, you may go to the Attorney General’s site and file a complaint against Walmart.com, https://www.atg.wa.gov/file-complaint.
You can also contact your bank and dispute the charge. Visa is usually pretty good about refunding the victim. However, Mastercard and Discover usually do NOT.
The initial “free Walmart+” offer was distributed through AARP emails to members, specifically targeting seniors.
